Matthew 5:43-48
Pray for those who persecute you
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You have learnt how it was said: You must love your neighbour and hate your enemy. But I say this to you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you; in this way you will be sons of your Father in heaven, for he causes his sun to rise on bad men as well as good, and his rain to fall on honest and dishonest men alike. For if you love those who love you, what right have you to claim any credit? Even the tax collectors do as much, do they not? And if you save your greetings for your brothers, are you doing anything exceptional? Even the pagans do as much, do they not? You must therefore be perfect just as your heavenly Father is perfect.’
Reflection
Jesus calls us beyond natural affection to a generous love that mirrors the Father’s mercy. Loving only those who love us is easy; loving our enemies and praying for those who persecute us requires the Spirit at work within us. When we forgive and bless others—especially those who oppose us—we participate in God’s expansive grace, shining as children of a Father who treats all with rain and sun, good and bad alike. The call to be “perfect” is a call to grow in Christlike generosity, letting His love redefine our expectations and transform our relationships.
Reflection Question
- In what small, concrete way can I begin praying for someone who has hurt me this week, entrusting the outcome to God’s mercy?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, deepen in me the heart of Your Son. Teach me to love beyond natural affection, to pray for those who treat me unfairly, and to offer grace where I would rather withhold it. Help me reflect Your mercy in my daily interactions, and grow me toward the likeness of Your perfect love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
