Matthew 5:38-42
Offer the wicked man no resistance
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You have learnt how it was said: Eye for eye and tooth for tooth. But I say this to you: offer the wicked man no resistance. On the contrary, if anyone hits you on the right cheek, offer him the other as well; if a man takes you to law and would have your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone orders you to go one mile, go two miles with him. Give to anyone who asks, and if anyone wants to borrow, do not turn away.’
Short reflection
Jesus invites a radical break from the old eye-for-an-eye mindset, calling his followers to mercy, generosity, and non-retaliation. When we respond to harm with grace—gifting more than what’s asked, walking extra miles, and sharing what we have—we reflect the character of God who loves not just the deserving but all. This passage challenges us to trust God’s justice and to chosenly prefer reconciliation over vengeance, letting kindness disarm hostility and soften hardened hearts.
Reflection question
- How can I practice going the extra mile in a specific situation this week, and how might that act reveal God’s love to others?
Short prayer
Lord Jesus, teach me to lay down my instinct to retaliate and to respond with generous, gracious love. Help me to trust your justice and to reflect your mercy in everyday choices—whether it’s offering more than is asked, sharing what I own, or walking beside someone who needs support. Empower my heart to be at peace, so others may encounter your kingdom through my small acts of kindness. Amen.
