Matthew 16:13-19
You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi he put this question to his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say he is John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ ‘But you,’ he said ‘who do you say I am?’ Then Simon Peter spoke up, ‘You are the Christ,’ he said ‘the Son of the living God.’ Jesus replied, ‘Simon son of Jonah, you are a happy man! Because it was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you but my Father in heaven. So I now say to you: You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church. And the gates of the underworld can never hold out against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth shall be considered loosed in heaven.’
Reflection
In the storm, Jesus rests while his disciples panic, a contrast that invites us to examine our own faith amid life’s tempests. The disciples’ cry, “Save us, Lord, we are going down,” reveals their instinct to turn to Jesus in danger, yet their question afterward—“Whatever kind of man is this? Even the winds and the sea obey him.”—exhibits a growing awe at who Jesus is. The calm that follows shows that faith is not merely a shield from trouble but trust in Jesus’ authority over all creation. When we feel overwhelmed, Jesus invites us to anchor our fear in relationship with him, remembering that his presence brings peace and that his power can calm the fiercest storms.
Question for reflection
- How can I deepen my trust in Jesus during the storms of my life, and what concrete steps can I take this week to turn to him first rather than letting fear lead the way?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me to hear your gentle question in the midst of my storms: why are you afraid? Teach me to rest in your presence, to trust in your sovereign voice that brings calm, and to witness your power with the same awe the disciples showed. Strengthen my faith, reduce my fear, and guide me to seek you first in every challenge. Amen.
