Matthew 13:18-23

The man who hears the word and understands it yields a rich harvest

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You are to hear the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom without understanding, the evil one comes and carries off what was sown in his heart: this is the man who received the seed on the edge of the path. The one who received it on patches of rock is the man who hears the word and welcomes it at once with joy. But he has no root in him, he does not last; let some trial come, or some persecution on account of the word, and he falls away at once. The one who received the seed in thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this world and the lure of riches choke the word and so he produces nothing. And the one who received the seed in rich soil is the man who hears the word and understands it; he is the one who yields a harvest and produces now a hundredfold, now sixty, now thirty.’

Reflection

Jesus invites us to examine how we receive the Word. Some hear with openness but quick to abandon when difficulty comes; others are varied by distractions—the worries of life and the lure of riches. Yet there is a gracious invitation to cultivate rich soil within our hearts: to listen, understand, and endure, so that the Word may take deep root and bear fruit—thirty, sixty, or a hundredfold. May we tend our inner soil with faith, trust, and perseverance, allowing God’s Word to transform our daily choices, relationships, and commitments into abundant life.

- What in my life would choke or uproot the Word, and what practical step can I take this week to cultivate deeper understanding and steadfastness in God’s message?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you sow the seed of your Word in our hearts. Help us to receive it with understanding, to guard it against the threats of doubt and distraction, and to nurture it with faith and perseverance. Let your Spirit root the truth in us so that we may bear fruit—thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold—for your glory. Amen.
