Matthew 11:20-24
It will not go as hard with Sodom on Judgement Day as with you
Jesus began to reproach the towns in which most of his miracles had been worked, because they refused to repent.
‘Alas for you, Chorazin! Alas for you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. And still, I tell you that it will not go as hard on Judgement day with Tyre and Sidon as with you. And as for you, Capernaum, did you want to be exalted as high as heaven? You shall be thrown down to hell. For if the miracles done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have been standing yet. And still, I tell you that it will not go as hard with the land of Sodom on Judgement day as with you.’
Reflection
Jesus challenges the towns whose familiarity with his miracles bred complacency rather than repentance. Knowledge of grace is not enough if it does not transform our hearts. Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum stood close to truth yet missed the turning toward God. Tyre, Sidon, and Sodom represent what happens when people resist grace; the measure of judgment grows where light has been received and rejected. The passage invites us to examine not where we have seen great works, but how we have allowed them to move us toward humility, repentance, and mercy toward others.
Reflection Question
In what ways might I be tempted to rely on past blessings or status rather than living today in repentance and faith?
Prayer
Gracious God, help me not to grown numb to your wonders or to treat your grace as casual familiarity. Open my heart to repentance that leads to transformation, humility that mirrors your mercy, and compassion that reaches out to others. May I respond to your miracles with faith that changes how I live each day. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
