Matthew 11:25-30
You have hidden these things from the wise and revealed them to little children
Jesus exclaimed, ‘I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, for hiding these things from the learned and the clever and revealing them to mere children. Yes, Father, for that is what it pleased you to do. Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, just as no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
‘Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest. Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light.’
Reflection
In this passage, Jesus invites the weary to exchange their heavy burdens for rest found in companionship with him. The contrast between the “wise and learned” and the “little children” reminds us that true understanding often comes not from cleverness, but from humility, openness, and trust. Jesus’ gentle yoke promises that true strength is found in surrendering our agendas to him, who bears the weight with us. When we come to him, we are invited into a relationship where rest is not passive withdrawal but a purposeful alignment with his gentle leadership.
Question for reflection**
- In what area of your life are you carrying an unnecessary burden, and how might you think and pray differently if you approached it with Jesus’ gentle yoke?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for revealing the truth to us through Jesus. Help me to approach you with childlike trust, releasing my heavy burdens into your hands. Teach me to learn from you—gentle and humble in heart—so that my soul may find true rest. May your strength carry what I cannot, and may your peace rule in every circumstance. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
