Matthew 9:32-37
The harvest is rich but the labourers are few
A man was brought to Jesus, a dumb demoniac. And when the devil was cast out, the dumb man spoke and the people were amazed. ‘Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel’ they said. But the Pharisees said, ‘It is through the prince of devils that he casts out devils.’
Jesus made a tour through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the Good News of the kingdom and curing all kinds of diseases and sickness.
And when he saw the crowds he felt sorry for them because they were harassed and dejected, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to his harvest.’
**Reflection on Matthew 9:32-37 — The Harvest is Rich, The Labourers Are Few**
When Jesus encounters a man oppressed by demons and witnesses the crowd's vulnerability, his heart moves with compassion. He sees more than physical ailment; he sees a people overwhelmed, scattered, and in need of guidance. In that moment, the call to laborers emerges from the reality of need: there is abundant work to do, but insufficient workers to do it. Jesus invites us into partnership with the mission of God — to proclaim good news, to heal, to shepherd, and to gather the scattered.
- **Compassion in action:** Jesus looks at the crowds and is moved to mercy, not judgment or indifference.
- **Power with purpose:** The miraculous deliverance serves a greater purpose — to reveal the Kingdom and invite people into God's care.
- **A posture of partnership:** The plea to the Lord of the harvest shifts work from human effort alone to dependence on divine provision.
- **Immediate need, eternal horizon:** While diseases are healed in the moment, the deeper need is for shepherds who can guide hearts toward the Father.
- **Our shared invitation:** We are called to join Jesus in praying, going, and serving so that the harvest might be gathered and cared for.

**Reflection Question**
- In what area of your life or in your community do you sense a need for more workers and shepherds, and how might you respond in prayer and action this week?

**Prayer**
Heavenly Father, you see the crowds and know our needs before we ask. Lord of the harvest, send laborers into your fields—begin with me. Grant me eyes like Jesus to notice people in need, a heart of compassion to serve, and courage to step into spaces of healing and invitation. Empower me by your Spirit to proclaim good news, to shepherd the vulnerable, and to partner with others in your mission. May your Kingdom come and your will be done in our neighborhoods as it is in heaven. Amen.
