Matthew 10:1-7
'Go to the lost sheep of the House of Israel'
Jesus summoned his twelve disciples, and gave them authority over unclean spirits with power to cast them out and to cure all kinds of diseases and sickness.
These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, the one who was to betray him. These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them as follows:
‘Do not turn your steps to pagan territory, and do not enter any Samaritan town; go rather to the lost sheep of the House of Israel. And as you go, proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.’
Short Reflection
Jesus calls his closest followers to go with purpose and discernment: they are sent to the “lost sheep of the House of Israel,” entrusted with healing, power over unclean spirits, and the message that the kingdom of heaven is near. The mission begins with clarity of identity (the twelve apostles) and a humble focus on where God’s presence is already at work. Our own calling often begins with listening for where love is already present, naming the needs we can meet, and then stepping out in faith to extend God’s mercy to others.
Reflection Question
How is God inviting you to serve where you see need today, and what small step can you take this week to join Jesus in bringing God’s kingdom near?
Short Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us to partner with You in Your mission. Grant me discernment to see where healing and mercy are needed, courage to step forward in faith, and humility to rely on Your strength. Let my actions reflect the kingdom that is near, and may I always point others toward Your love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
