Matthew 9:14-17
When the bridegroom is taken from them, then they will fast
John’s disciples came to him and said, ‘Why is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not?’ Jesus replied, ‘Surely the bridegroom’s attendants would never think of mourning as long as the bridegroom is still with them? But the time will come for the bridegroom to be taken away from them, and then they will fast. No one puts a piece of unshrunken cloth on to an old cloak, because the patch pulls away from the cloak and the tear gets worse. Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; if they do, the skins burst, the wine runs out, and the skins are lost. No; they put new wine into fresh skins and both are preserved.’
**Reflection on Matthew 9:14-17 — “The Bridegroom’s Presence and New Wineskins”**
- In this passage, Jesus invites his followers to notice the difference between old expectations and the new life he brings. While others fast and mourn in anticipation, the bridegroom is with them, bringing presence, joy, and divine companionship.
- The image of patching an old cloak with new cloth and filling old wineskins with new wine highlights a core truth: God’s transforming work often requires a fresh approach, not merely adjustments to what already is. Where there is weariness and rigidity, Jesus offers renewal that cannot be contained by yesterday’s methods.
- The feast-like presence of the Messiah calls us to trust in the Holy Spirit’s newness in our communities and personal lives. When we cling to old forms without openness to invitation and surprise, we risk losing the fruit God intends to pour into us.
Question for reflection
- In what area of my life or church community might I be clinging to old methods, missing the invitation to receive the “new wine” of God’s presence today?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Son, the Bridegroom, who brings not just truth but joy and presence. Help me to recognize when old patterns limit Your Spirit’s movement in my life. Grant me the grace to welcome the new wine You pour out, and the wisdom to know when to let go of worn-out rituals in favor of fresh faith, hope, and love. May my heart be a receptive home for Your transformative work today and always. Amen.
