Matthew 22:34-40
The commandments of love
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees they got together and, to disconcert him, one of them put a question, ‘Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?’ Jesus said, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets also.’
Reflection:
In this Gospel, Jesus simplifies the entire Law into two essential commandments: love for God and love for others. This shows that faith is not just about rules or rituals, but about relationships rooted in love. Loving God with all our heart, soul, and mind means giving Him our whole being, while loving our neighbor means reflecting that same love in how we treat others. Everything we believe and do as Christians is grounded in this double command of love.
Reflection Question:
How can I better show love for God in my daily life, and who is one person I am called to love more deeply today?
Short Prayer:
Lord Jesus, teach me to love You with all my heart, soul, and mind. Help me to reflect Your love to those around me, especially those who are difficult to love. Make my life a true witness of Your love. Amen.
