Matthew 23:27-32

You are the sons of those who murdered the prophets

Jesus said: ‘Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You who are like whitewashed tombs that look handsome on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of corruption. In the same way you appear to people from the outside like good honest men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

‘Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You who build the sepulchres of the prophets and decorate the tombs of holy men, saying, “We would never have joined in shedding the blood of the prophets, had we lived in our fathers’ day.” So! Your own evidence tells against you! You are the sons of those who murdered the prophets! Very well then, finish off the work that your fathers began.’

Short Reflection

In today’s Gospel, Jesus warns against living a life that looks holy on the outside but is empty or corrupted within. Like whitewashed tombs, the scribes and Pharisees appeared righteous before others, yet their hearts were far from God. This passage invites us to examine our inner life honestly. True discipleship is not about appearances, but about conversion of heart, humility, and living according to God’s truth. Jesus calls us to remove hypocrisy and allow His grace to make us clean from within.

Are there areas in my life where I appear faithful outwardly, but still need inner conversion and honesty before God?

Short Prayer

Lord Jesus, help me to live with sincerity and humility. Cleanse my heart from hypocrisy, pride, and hidden sin. May my faith be genuine, not only in appearance, but in the way I think, speak, and act each day. Amen.
