The women who accompanied Jesus

Jesus made his way through towns and villages preaching, and proclaiming the Good News of the kingdom of God. With him went the Twelve, as well as certain women who had been cured of evil spirits and ailments: Mary surnamed the Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, Joanna the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, Susanna, and several others who provided for them out of their own resources.

 Reflection
Jesus’ journey through towns and villages was supported by a diverse community that challenged the social norms of His time. While the Twelve are often the focus, Luke highlights the essential presence of Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna, and many others. These women were not mere bystanders; they were active partners whose service was rooted in deep gratitude for the healing they had received. By providing for the ministry out of their own resources, they demonstrated that discipleship involves both spiritual devotion and practical sacrifice. Their lives remind us that everyone, regardless of status, has a vital role in sustaining the work of the Kingdom.

In what ways can I use my unique resources—whether they be time, talents, or finances—to support the work of God’s Kingdom in my community today?

 Prayer
Lord Jesus, we thank You for the example of the faithful women who accompanied You and supported Your mission. Give us hearts of gratitude for the healing and grace we have received, and move us to serve You with the same generosity and devotion. May we be willing to offer what we have to further the Good News. Amen.
