Luke 9:1-6

'Take nothing for the journey'

Jesus called the Twelve together and gave them power and authority over all devils and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. He said to them, ‘Take nothing for the journey: neither staff, nor haversack, nor bread, nor money; and let none of you take a spare tunic. Whatever house you enter, stay there; and when you leave, let it be from there. As for those who do not welcome you, when you leave their town shake the dust from your feet as a sign to them.’ So they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the Good News and healing everywhere.

Reflection

In Luke 9:1-6, Jesus commissions the Twelve with a radical mandate: "Take nothing for the journey." By stripping them of material security—staff, bread, money—Jesus forces a shift from self-reliance to total dependence on God’s Providence. This detachment isn't about deprivation, but about freedom. Unburdened by "stuff," the disciples can focus entirely on their dual mission of healing and proclaiming the Kingdom. We are reminded that our effectiveness in ministry comes from the authority Jesus grants, not our personal resources. When we empty our hands, we are better equipped to carry the Gospel and trust God to provide.

What "extra tunic" or material security am I clinging to that prevents me from fully trusting in God’s provision for my own journey of faith?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me to share in Your mission. Grant me the grace of detachment, so that I may not be weighed down by worldly worries or the need for constant security. Help me to trust in Your authority and Your daily provision, seeking only to be a vessel of Your healing and peace to everyone I encounter. Amen.
