Luke 9:43-45

They were afraid to ask him what he meant

At a time when everyone was full of admiration for all he did, Jesus said to his disciples, ‘For your part, you must have these words constantly in your mind: “The Son of Man is going to be handed over into the power of men.”’ But they did not understand him when he said this; it was hidden from them so that they should not see the meaning of it, and they were afraid to ask him about what he had just said.

Reflection

In the wake of miraculous healing, while the crowds were swept up in awe, Jesus spoke a sobering truth: glory is inseparable from sacrifice. He urged His disciples to keep His impending betrayal "constantly in mind," yet they remained in the dark. Their silence was born of fear—a fear that asking for clarity might confirm a reality they weren't ready to face. Like the disciples, we often prefer a God of power over a God who suffers. We hesitate to ask deep questions when the answers might lead us toward the Cross. Yet, Jesus invites us into the full mystery of His love.

What "hard saying" or difficult reality in your life are you currently afraid to bring to Jesus in prayer?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for Your patience with my slow heart. When I am confused by Your ways or fearful of the path ahead, give me the courage to keep seeking You. Open my eyes to the meaning of Your sacrifice, and help me to trust that even in suffering, You are working for my good. Amen.
