30 Don't doubt in following Christ

Luke 9:57-62

'I will follow you wherever you go'

As Jesus and his disciples travelled along they met a man on the road who said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’ Jesus answered, ‘Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’

Another to whom he said, ‘Follow me’, replied, ‘Let me go and bury my father first.’ But he answered, ‘Leave the dead to bury their dead; your duty is to go and spread the news of the kingdom of God.’

Another said, ‘I will follow you, sir, but first let me go and say goodbye to my people at home.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Once the hand is laid on the plough, no one who looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.’

Reflection

This passage highlights the radical nature of Christian discipleship. Jesus does not offer a path of comfort or convenience; instead, He calls for a total reordering of our priorities. Each encounter reveals a common human tendency: the desire to follow God on our own terms or only after other obligations are met. Jesus’ "hard sayings" remind us that the work of the Kingdom is urgent and requires an undivided heart. To follow Him is to choose the uncertainty of the road over the security of the nest, and the promise of the future over the pull of the past.

What is the "nest" or "social obligation" in my life right now that I am using as an excuse to delay fully committing myself to God’s call?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, give me a heart that responds to Your call without hesitation or excuse. Help me to trust You more than my own need for security, and grant me the focus to keep my hand on the plough, looking always toward Your Kingdom. Amen.
