How Jesus Christ came to be born

This is how Jesus Christ came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph; but before they came to live together she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph; being a man of honour and wanting to spare her publicity, decided to divorce her informally. He had made up his mind to do this when the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because she has conceived what is in her by the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son and you must name him Jesus, because he is the one who is to save his people from their sins.’ Now all this took place to fulfil the words spoken by the Lord through the prophet:

The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son

and they will call him Emmanuel,

a name which means ‘God-is-with-us.’

Reflection

This passage reveals the tender intersection of human struggle and divine intervention. Joseph, faced with an impossible situation, chooses mercy over judgment, demonstrating true righteousness. Yet, God invites him into a much larger story—the fulfillment of ancient promises. The miracle of the Virgin Birth isn't just a theological wonder; it is the ultimate assurance that God refuses to remain distant. By naming the child Jesus, God declares His intent to save, and through the name Emmanuel, He promises His perpetual presence. We are reminded that even in our confusion, God is actively weaving His plan of redemption.

Like Joseph, where in your life is God asking you to set aside your own plans or fears to trust in His bigger, albeit mysterious, purpose?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Emmanuel, "God-with-us." When life feels uncertain or my plans fail, grant me a heart like Joseph’s—righteous, compassionate, and willing to listen to Your voice. Help me to trust in Your saving power and to live daily in the light of Your abiding presence. Amen.
