Gospel
Luke 11:37-41
Give thanks for what you have and it will all be clean
Jesus had just finished speaking when a Pharisee invited him to dine at his house. He went in and sat down at the table. The Pharisee saw this and was surprised that he had not first washed before the meal. But the Lord said to him, ‘Oh, you Pharisees! You clean the outside of cup and plate, while inside yourselves you are filled with extortion and wickedness. Fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside too? Instead, give alms from what you have and then indeed everything will be clean for you.’
Reflection
Jesus challenges the Pharisee’s preoccupation with external rituals, reminding us that God sees the heart. We often polish our public image while harboring hidden selfishness. True transformation occurs when we shift our focus from outward appearances to the condition of our souls. By practicing genuine charity and giving selflessly, we allow God’s grace to cleanse us from the inside out. Purity is not a religious performance; it is the fruit of a sincere, generous heart that seeks to love God truly.
Question for Reflection
In what areas of my life am I more concerned with looking "clean" to others than being honest and generous before God?
Prayer
Lord, cleanse my heart from the need for human approval and the trap of outward pretense. Teach me to be truly generous with all that I have, so that my inner life may reflect Your love and grace. Amen.
