Gospel
Luke 11:42-46
You overlook justice and the love of God
The Lord said to the Pharisees: ‘Alas for you Pharisees! You who pay your tithe of mint and rue and all sorts of garden herbs and overlook justice and the love of God! These you should have practised, without leaving the others undone. Alas for you Pharisees who like taking the seats of honour in the synagogues and being greeted obsequiously in the market squares! Alas for you, because you are like the unmarked tombs that men walk on without knowing it!
A lawyer then spoke up. ‘Master,’ he said ‘when you speak like this you insult us too.’
‘Alas for you lawyers also,’ he replied ‘because you load on men burdens that are unendurable, burdens that you yourselves do not move a finger to lift.’
Reflection
Jesus calls us to a faith that transcends mere ritual. The Pharisees excelled in minor observances but neglected the heart of God’s law: justice and love. True holiness isn't found in public recognition or meticulous rule-following, but in a sincere heart that seeks to uplift others rather than burdening them. We must examine if our religious practices are masks for spiritual emptiness. Let us prioritize the weighty matters of mercy, ensuring our outward devotion reflects a genuine internal transformation.
Question for Reflection
Do I focus more on following external religious rules and seeking approval than on practicing justice and showing genuine love to those in need?
Prayer
Lord, cleanse my heart of hypocrisy. Help me to prioritize justice and love above all else. Give me the grace to lift the burdens of others rather than adding to them, so that my life may truly reflect Your mercy and truth. Amen.
