Gospel
Luke 14:1-6
'Is it against the law to cure a man on the sabbath?'
Now on a sabbath day Jesus had gone for a meal to the house of one of the leading Pharisees; and they watched him closely. There in front of him was a man with dropsy, and Jesus addressed the lawyers and Pharisees. ‘Is it against the law’ he asked ‘to cure a man on the sabbath, or not?’ But they remained silent, so he took the man and cured him and sent him away. Then he said to them, ‘Which of you here, if his son falls into a well, or his ox, will not pull him out on a sabbath day without hesitation?’ And to this they could find no answer.
Reflection
Jesus exposes the emptiness of legalism that lacks compassion. While the Pharisees watched Him closely to find fault, Jesus looked at the man with dropsy with love. By healing on the Sabbath, He reinstates the day's true purpose: a time for restoration and life. He challenges us to prioritize people over rigid rules, reminding us that God’s mercy is never on a break. True holiness isn't found in strict compliance that ignores suffering, but in active, courageous love.
Question for Reflection
When I follow religious traditions or personal rules, is my primary motivation to appear "correct" to others, or is it to be a vessel of God's compassion and healing?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, soften my heart to see others as You see them. Help me never to let traditions or social expectations become barriers to showing Your mercy. Grant me the courage to do good and to prioritize the needs of my neighbors above my own comfort or reputation. Amen.
